Summer Camps 2024

Combat Sports (4-High)

This class is a combination of Weapons Dueling, Jugger, and Slinging. Jugger is a 5v5 field sport similar to touch football, where players use boffer/swimming noodle weapons to tag each other. The basic Jugger boffer weapons include: Sword & Shield, Dual Short Sword, Long Sword, Staff, and Flail. Coach Steve will then introduce students to slings (aka pouch slings, rock slings, or shepherd’s slings), which dominated the battlefields of the ancient world. Don’t worry, we won’t be using rocks. Instead we’ll be using soft foam practice balls about the same density as marshmallows.

SEL Martial Arts (K-6)

*No Prerequisites*

If you have kids that love to explore and discover things their own way, my SEL classes will be perfect for them. I support their natural curiosity in how the world works, particularly in the realm of social interactions, group dynamics, and emotional awareness.

Martial arts is the context for social interactions that will challenge them when they come up against a difference of opinion, desire, or emotional state. These teachable moments help them build healthy coping mechanisms so they can grow into compassionate and responsible leaders.

Your child will learn kungfu basics to improve their strength, stamina, and flexibility. During SEL play time, they will learn valuable skills like:
– Consent & Negotiation
– Knowing, Expressing, & Respecting Boundaries
– Being Responsible for their choices

Circus Acrobatics (Mid-High)

Join Coach Steve as he guides you through basic circus skills and fitness exercises! This class is divided into 3 sections: Warm-Ups, Drills, and Skills.

The Warm-Ups section will introduce them to well-known exercises designed to improve their cardio stamina, macro strength, and flexibility.

The Drills section is designed to bolster a fundamental ability needed for the following Skills section.

The Skills section will introduce fun circus skills designed to challenge their strength, stamina, mental focus, balance, hand-eye coordination, communication, and teamwork. The rotation includes: safety rolls & falls, acrobatics, juggling,, balance boards, handstands, acroyoga, and partnered acrobatics.

Sports & Fitness (Mid-High)

Coach Steve as leads you through the physical and social skills needed to play popular sports. Not only will learning these sports help develop their body awareness, strength, coordination, and flexibility, but it will also help them get along in social groups where sports is a common interest.

Coach Steve is a trained Physical Education teacher that will set up your child for a lifetime of physical activity. In this class, he will:

  • Teach them how to keep their bodies safe so they can continue to exercise into old age
  • Develop sensitivity to their bodily and emotional needs; when to push forward and when to take a break

Sports covered in this class may include (but not limited to):

  • Ultimate Frisbee
  • Baseball/Whiffle ball
  • Soccer
  • Flag Football
  • Pickleball
  • Handball

Self Defense (Mid-High)

Self defense techniques will be taught through trial-and-error and self-discovery, because not every technique works for every student or situation. They will learn what strategies work best for themselves, and in what circumstances, as well as develop an instinctual sense of danger.

The Oppositional Games start with trying to imbalance your opponent. At more advanced levels, it involves strategic attack and retreat, deception, and knowing your opponent. Coach Steve will advance the level of the Games depending on what he thinks the students can do safely, given their demonstrated level of control.

Secrets of Power: Persuasion (Mid-High)

Have you ever wondered why you get a lot more Nos than Yeses? In this course, Coach Steve will help demystify how people make their decisions, so that you can turn those Nos into Yeses with ease. Hint: there’s a lot more to it than just the words you say.

Topics include:

  • Consent: This is the baseline of getting someone to listen to you. If you don’t have their consent, they’re definitely not listening.
  • Making Clear Requests: If you think you’re making a request but what you want is not happening, maybe you’re not being clear enough.
  • Active Listening: When people feel understood by you, they’re much more likely to listen to you.
  • Effective Apologies: Much more than just “I’m sorry.” And you don’t even have to say you’re sorry.
  • Positive Reinforcement: The secret sauce to developing long-term trust.

In addition, you will choose something you want to accomplish that you thought was impossible. The goal is to accomplish it before the end of the semester, but typically it gets done much sooner. If that happens, you’ll then choose a second goal, and then even possibly a third or fourth.

Coach Steve is a trained Communications Coach with 11 years of training & experience in supporting people with their Relationships.

Historical Archery (4-High)

**NOTE: This class will meet at the Black Mountain Bowmen Range (Avenida Espana, SJ 95139) from 9:00 – 10:20am.**

Have you ever wondered what it was like to be an archer on a medieval battlefield? There were archers all around the world, with different bow designs and draw styles.

Join Coach Steve, Certified Archery Instructor, in one of his favorite new hobbies! In this class we will learn:

  • 3-finger Mediterranean Draw, popular in most modern competitions today, and also what is seen most in movies;
  • Thumb Draw, the predominant historical technique used across Asia, the Middle East, and Africa;
  • GaoYing Long Draw, a Chinese Ming Dynasty Military Archery technique.

If there’s time, I may also introduce them to several other lesser-known techniques to show them the breadth of Historical Archery:

  • Slavic Draw, mostly used nowadays for speed archery and running archery;
  • Manchu Long Draw: Chinese Qing Dynasty Military Archery;
  • Kneeling & Parthian shots

Hi, I'm Coach Steve Yang... I am a Teacher and Life Coach.

I have five years of experience as a classroom teacher and five years of experience as a kids Martial Arts instructor.

I was hired to train preschool staff on Classroom Management.

I have eight years of training and experience as an Empowerment and Communications Coach.

I spent five years in China learning KungFu and I use this experience to teach the children in my class authentic Martial Arts.

My path as a life coach combined with my deep understanding of children has built my philosophy:

  • We should trust that children are trying to regulate themselves to the best of their ability.
  • Children learn most when they feel respected and valued.
  • Autonomy allows children to be responsible for their own choices, which further promotes their learning and growth. Children also enjoy the process of learning more when they are in control of it.

  • I have a passion for personal growth, education, and working with children. I use this combined passion to teach children the most valuable skills needed for living a successful and fulfilling life.

The skills that I teach are never taught in any academic subject:

  • Emotional Awareness & Regulation
  • Compassion
  • Understanding
  • Relatability

These are the skills that are going to help your child in situations they encounter throughout their youth but also in their future relationships – familial, platonic, and romantic. As well as any job that requires teamwork, management, and leadership.

I love the feeling of being able to make an impact on a child’s present life, but I also love the fact that I could be creating a lasting positive impact on their future.
